I stumbled across Kuhn’s while visiting family in Ogden and decided to give the Black Sea beard butter a try. I loved the ingredients, scent, and how well it handled my beard, so I went back for the Black Sea co-wash and balm. After using Live Bearded for about two years, I’m officially making the switch. Great products, and I really appreciate Kuhn’s business model and what they’re building as a local business. Highly recommend!
I have used a lot of different products for my beard. All these products are excellent you can't go wrong with any of them. Products are great and you get to choose your own flavor of smell lol!!! I'm sticking right here.
I've tried a bunch of different products to try and keep my beard in check, but I always come back to Kühn's beard balm. It's the only one I've found that gets my beard feeling and looking just right without getting it too greasy.
My husband loved these products! And he has gone through so many different brands of beard oils that have been a miss.
What he liked and how it differed from other beard oils:
- it’s not greasy
-scent is clean and stays on a long time
-Beard looks clean
-he used to shed heavy beard dandruff and have noticed a significant difference (this is using the charcoal soap occasionally, gentle beard wash daily and oil in day and beard butter at night)
A note about scents:
*If you are on the fence, I ordered the kit with each product in a different scent so he can see what he likes. He liked all of them. But light/fresh scents are mountain mist and Black Sea, while stronger/muskier scents are mountain whiskey and mahogany
Bought this for my Husband who is new to growing a beard, he loves it! It has helped soften his beard and it smells great. I think the butter is he favorite.
Amazing products! I love the Kuhn bead oil (really all my selections). I have a short beard, so the beard oil is great just on its own for control and moisturizing. The beard butter is light, but offers excellent control. I love the Apple & Bourbon scent!

First time purchasing. Love this stuff. I would definitely recommend getting the oil sample pack so you can find your right scent as some can be very strong.
The butter is very thick I have to water it down to get it to spread well and even then it doesn’t seem to spread evenly. The oil doesn’t seem to penetrate as well as other brands I have used. First time I have used these products.
I get my husband a couple of beard oils for Christmas every year! He loves them. I love them on him! We have previously stick with Mahogany, but this year we branched out to Misty Mountain - definitely a new fav!

Stumbled across this company a few years ago at a farmers market and so happy we did! My husband loves the beard butter and boars hair beard brush. The scents are very subtle but last. He’s tried many other products from different companies and this is the only one he will use.

The beard balm is the best quality balm I have ever used. And I've tried A LOT of different brands. The Balm smells great, absorbs great, and doesn't make my beard feel tacky after. The oil itself is the best smelling oil I've ever tried too. Combined, I'll never use a different brand.
The Soap is decent too, but not a lot of scent, and the soap doesn't seem to lather and spread well as easy as other competitors. But still a fine product
The beard balm and oil is by far the best I've ever tried. The balm dissolves nicely. And the oil smells amazing. The soap is the only reason I don't give this 5 stars. It's okay, doesn't have a ton of scent and doesn't spread as easily as other natural soaps I've tried.
Great brand! I’ve tried tons of other brands… grave before shave, honest Amish, and others. The beard butter is fantastic with a pleasant smell and nice texture.

I got misty mountain. The smell is great! It’s hard to describe though maybe like a deep fruity? The oil is the best out of anything I’ve ever used. I like the consistency of the butter. However, it doesn’t last as long as I’d like it to when it comes to keeping my flyaways down. Other than that will definitely order again!
The oils are super easy to absorb into my beard and definitely high quality but the soap? I never knew I needed soap like this! Winter is Coming is soooo so so good. Wish that was a scent offered elsewhere but man, what a good value and great products.
I had Birchwood and Misty Mountains as oil scents and both are very subtle but stay. I know some people like in your face scents and this is a con, but for me I love subtle scents and it’s hard to get ones that don’t overpower all day while still getting a whiff the next morning.
As for soaps, obviously winter is coming is a banger for me. It’s amazing, but I also got Forest Oud and it’s very clean too.
Warm a small amount between your palms until it melts, then work it through — damp or dry, doesn't matter much. Focus on the flyaways, balm works better for that.
Can I use shampoo or hair conditioner on my beard?
Yes, you can — though it's better to use our co-wash. It's sulfate-free and keeps your hair and beard feeling moisturized instead of dried out, which is what regular shampoo sulfates will do to it.
Are beard oils safe?
Yes — ours is non-comedogenic, five real cold-pressed oils, no phthalates or filler. If you've got a known nut or seed oil allergy, check the ingredients first like you would with anything else you put on your skin.
What beard products do I actually need?
Co-wash in the shower, then oil, butter, or balm after you towel off. That combo alone will make your beard really soft — add balm on top of the oil or butter if you also want hold.
Does beard balm/butter/oil help my beard grow?
No — nothing you put on your face makes hair grow faster, that's genetics. What balm does is stop breakage and calm the itch that makes guys pick and over-trim, so you keep more of what you're already growing.
How much beard balm should I use?
Usually more than you think — I see a lot of guys use too little. Just keep applying until it feels like enough for the length of your beard. Longer beard, more balm. Thicker beard, more balm.
What is beard balm used for?
Balm's heavier and thicker than oil or butter, so it holds. That's what keeps your flyaways down and helps your beard keep its shape through the day, on top of conditioning it.
Is beard balm the same as beard butter?
Nope. My balm's about 30% beeswax, my butter's only around 5% — so butter still has a touch of hold, just way less than balm. Both condition your beard, balm just adds a lot more hold on top of that.
Should I use beard butter at night?
Sure. Good option if you want deep conditioning working overnight without any hold or shine the next morning.
How often should I use beard butter/balm/oil?`
Daily. Damp beard, right after your shower.
Do you use beard butter or oil first?
You can use both, if you want — I'd do oil first, it's easier to apply butter on top after. But you don't have to use both. Either one alone works fine, oil for a normal day, butter if your beard's especially dry.
Can I use beard oil, balm, and butter together?
Yes, and a lot of guys do. Oil or butter for daily conditioning, balm on top if you want hold. Just don't use oil and butter in the same routine — pick one based on how dry your beard's running that day.
I use beard oil/balm/butter but my beard is still really dry and unruly, why?
A well moisturized beard starts in the shower and what you wash it with. If you wash your beard with shampoo or regular bar soap, your beard is being stripped and will be very dry. You need to use a conditioner or co-wash.
I'm new to beard products, what's the difference between oil/balm/butter?
They are all designed to moisturize your skin and beard, they just do it in a slightly different manner. Keep it simple. Short beards, beard oil. A bit longer, beard butter. Longer and/or thicker unruly beards, beard balm. Start with an oil and butter if you're new, then go from there.
What's the shelf life of oil/balm/butter?
12 months if stored in a cool, dry place.
How much do I use of oil/balm/butter?
Depends on the length of your beard, but most don't use enough. You need enough to cover all of the hair follicles. It's difficult to apply too much, and very easy to use too little.
How long does the scent last?
You should expect 6-8 hour from our scents.
Will it stain my clothes?
No, it shouldn't. Most beard products leave a greasy film on the outside of your beard which can rub off onto your clothes. Our products are designed to absorb fully so there shouldn't be any transfer onto your shirt or other clothing.
What if I order a scent I don't like?
TOO BAD! I already got your money. JK. If you order any product from kühn and you're not happy with the scent, we will replace it with the scent of you choice. We'll never make someone keep a scent they won't wear.
